I posted several weeks ago about cleaning boxes of books out of my parents’ house. After tossing the ones with mold and giving the rest the airing you see here, I put them in a big plastic tote with a large bag of charcoal to hopefully absorb the musty odor. It worked! All the newer books (the ones I bought in the mid-90s to 2000) smell like book now, rather than musty porch. The older ones–the ones from the 60s and 70s that I bought at tag sales and library fundraisers–need a little more time. How fantastic, though, that an $8 bag of charcoal has returned my Jane Austen novels to me, among dozens of others.
